Review
Matchmaker.com’s initial membership is free to all users. You can post and search the database at no charge; however, in order to use some of Matchmaker’s additional features like email and chat you have to be a Gold member.
Search Capabilities:
Matchmaker.com has put together a good search tool that helps you find dozens of people in your area. You can be picky about some basic physical attributes and personality characteristics.
You can do quick search, advanced searches with detail, even a “one click” match that returns random profiles instantly. Search results are based on geographic area, and you can’t search out of your given region. But Matchmaker does include results in your searches from neighboring states. (Location is a realistic priority for a dating search engine because most people are not going to travel 3000 miles for a date.)
You can sort the “online now” list using a few factors such as distance, age range, and “last visited.” Sorting by the last factor means profiles you’ve checked previously will be listed first. This is useful when you are in the mood to chat online with someone you’ve seen before but haven’t bothered to contact yet.
Profile Setup:
Matchmaker may not allow you to pick your own username. We used a unique one, and the website insisted on tacking three numbers onto it. Aside from this small inconvenience, set up was simple.
Compatibility Analysis:
There are no personality profile tests available on this site, simply a list of questions on major issues that draw a general picture of who you are. Questions include things like your pastimes, your politics, and even a statement on your sexual experience. And you don’t have to think of your own wording on these—Matchmaker offers you several radio-button options.
It’s easy to complete the more detailed portion of the profile in just a few minutes also—they’ve got just 23 questions, like: “What personality habits of others really irritate you?” and “If you could do lunch with anyone, who would it be?” You can be far more creative on these entries since you type in your own text.
Apparently, Matchmaker used to have profile filters (and you can still use these if you’ve set them up previously) but now they offer Matchmarkers. After you create a custom search, you can label your search results as “classy” or “athletic.” For example, profiles that meet your criteria for classy people or athletic people will be marked with a small icon Matchmarker, such as a wine glass or soccer ball.
Membership Features:
Matchmaker.com has all the important features, such as email, online chat and a Hot List that you can use to save your favorite contacts. You can also opt to add a voice greeting to your profile, but Matchmaker doesn’t offer any flirt features common on other dating sites, such as winks and smiles.
One feature Matchmaker has that we haven’t noticed on other sites is the Notes to Self feature. You can jot a note to yourself right on top of other people’s profiles—if you’ve set a date, you can jot it by the right picture so that you don’t forget!
This website has several blocking choices—you can opt to “become invisible” so no one can see you while you are online, and also you can also block specific members if you don’t want to communicate anymore. Unfortunately, Matchmaker sends out an email (a polite one) to let the person that you are blocking know that you have blocked them. This may defeat the purpose of the block. If you are in the mood to block someone, you just want to halt communication and disappear. Announcing that to the person with a block notification email—even politely—might inflict extra pain on the one you’ve blocked.

Matchmaker is quite uncomplicated, easy to navigate. You can select every link from your home page on your profile. This is also available on the left column if you navigate away from your home page.
One nice feature on this site that most dating websites don’t permit—Matchmaker doesn’t kick you off if I leave your account open for an hour and don’t do anything. Most other dating sites bump you off for inactivity after 45 minutes or so.

Matchmaker.com has all of the basic options you need for online dating. Because the search and personality features are much shorter on this website, you’ll spend less time filling out your profile. That means you’ll have to get to know one another better in person—not a bad option.
